Avatar Natural Foods is a fast-growing food manufacturing and consumer products company behind brands including Bettr Bowls, Yaya’s Kitchens, Tuscany Cookies, and Cali Crumble.
We operate manufacturing facilities in Nevada and California and are rapidly expanding our retail, manufacturing, supply-chain, and technology operations.
We are building internal software and AI-powered systems to improve how our teams operate across manufacturing, sales, finance, customer service, supply chain, product development, and executive management.
We are looking for someone who is excited about using modern AI tools to build real software that gets used every day.
The Role
We are hiring an AI Backend Engineer to help build and improve our internal software platform using modern AI technologies, with a strong emphasis on Claude AI / Anthropic, LLM APIs, AI agents, prompt engineering, backend development, and workflow automation.
This is not a traditional backend role where AI is simply an add-on.
You should be someone who actively uses AI while developing software and understands how to turn business requirements into reliable AI-powered applications.
You will work directly with company leadership and our development team to design, build, test, and deploy features quickly.
Our development team is growing, so you must also be comfortable working in an environment where multiple engineers may be developing different parts of the application simultaneously.
What You Will Do
- Build backend services and APIs for AI-powered applications.
- Integrate Claude / Anthropic APIs and other leading LLM platforms.
- Design and improve prompts, system prompts, structured outputs, and AI workflows.
- Build AI agents capable of performing multi-step business tasks.
- Implement AI tool/function calling and API integrations.
- Build systems that allow AI models to interact securely with databases and internal applications.
- Develop RAG and knowledge-retrieval systems using company documents and business data.
- Create structured workflows that combine AI reasoning with deterministic business logic.
- Build REST and/or GraphQL APIs.
- Design scalable backend architecture.
- Work with SQL and NoSQL databases.
- Implement authentication, permissions, and role-based access.
- Integrate third-party applications and APIs.
- Develop background jobs, queues, notifications, and automated workflows.
- Improve application speed, reliability, logging, and error handling.
- Write clean, maintainable, documented code.
- Create automated tests and participate in code reviews.
- Work closely with frontend engineers to define reliable API contracts.
- Use Git, branches, pull requests, and development environments that allow multiple developers to work safely at the same time.
- Help establish technical standards and architecture as our platform grows.
AI Experience We Are Looking For
We strongly prefer candidates with hands-on experience building applications using:
- Claude / Anthropic API
- Claude Code
- OpenAI APIs or similar LLM platforms
- Prompt engineering
- System-prompt design
- Structured outputs / JSON generation
- Function calling / tool use
- AI agents and agentic workflows
- Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG)
- Embeddings
- Vector databases
- Context management
- LLM evaluation and testing
- AI workflow automation
- MCP or similar AI tool integration frameworks
You do not need to be a machine-learning researcher.
We care much more about your ability to build useful AI-powered software than your ability to train machine-learning models from scratch.
Technical Qualifications
Strong experience with one or more backend languages, preferably:
- Python
- TypeScript / Node.js
Experience with frameworks such as:
- FastAPI
- Django
- Flask
- NestJS
- Express
- Similar modern backend frameworks
Experience with:
- PostgreSQL / SQL
- NoSQL databases
- REST APIs
- Git / GitHub
- Docker
- Cloud infrastructure such as AWS, GCP, Azure, Supabase, or similar platforms
- Authentication and authorization
- CI/CD
- API integrations
- Automated testing
- Production debugging and monitoring
Experience with vector databases such as Pinecone, pgvector, Weaviate, Qdrant, or similar technologies is a plus.

You should be the type of engineer who can receive a business problem such as:
“We have hundreds of customer issues coming from email and our website. Build an AI system that categorizes them, identifies repeat quality problems, drafts responses, escalates critical complaints, and creates a weekly management report.”
…and be able to think through the architecture and actually build it.
