About the job
We are seeking a Java Software Developer to design, develop, and deploy advanced decision-support systems that improve transportation planning, network performance, operational efficiency, and service reliability across a railroad network. This role combines software engineering, operations research, transportation analytics, and data visualization to deliver scalable solutions that support critical business and operational decisions.
Responsibilities
- Design, develop, and implement web-based transportation planning and decision-support applications
- Develop analytical solutions supporting network planning, service design, operational performance, and disruption management
- Create intuitive user interfaces and interactive data visualization tools to support decision-making
- Design, develop, and maintain ETL processes and integrated data repositories for analytical applications
- Build enterprise-grade software solutions using Java and modern web technologies
- Provide production support, maintenance, troubleshooting, and continuous enhancement of existing applications
- Collaborate with business stakeholders, railroad operations teams, and software developers to identify process improvement opportunities
- Translate complex business requirements into scalable analytical and software solutions
- Support software testing, deployment, implementation, and post-production activities
- Leverage operations research methodologies to optimize transportation and operational outcomes
- Utilize AI tools and technologies to enhance development efficiency and analytical capabilities
Required Skills
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Operations Research, Information Systems, or a related quantitative discipline
- 1-3 years of full-stack software development experience
- Experience developing enterprise applications using Java-based technologies
- Strong programming skills in Java and Python
- Proficiency with JavaScript, React, HTML5, and CSS
- Experience developing data-driven user interfaces and visualization solutions
- Strong SQL skills and experience working with relational databases
- Experience working in Linux/UNIX environments
- Experience leveraging AI tools and technologies
Preferred Skills
- Knowledge of railroad operations and transportation planning
- Understanding of network design principles and operational optimization
- Experience with transportation analytics and operational research modeling
- Experience building large-scale analytical or decision-support platforms
- Familiarity with data warehousing and advanced data integration practices
- Experience developing interactive dashboards and visualization applications
- Ability to collaborate effectively with technical and business stakeholders
