Role Purpose
The primary role of the Cloud CoE Senior Database Engineer is to provide deep technical expertise across enterprise database platforms and support the execution of the database technology roadmap. The role acts as the technical authority for database services, partnering closely with Product Owners, Cloud Engineering teams, Architecture, Security teams, and strategic partners to deliver resilient, secure, scalable, and highly automated database platforms.
You will be responsible for driving database reliability, sustainability, modernization, and operational excellence across Oracle, Microsoft SQL Server, and cloud-based database services. The ideal candidate will possess extensive hands-on experience in database engineering, performance tuning, troubleshooting, cloud technologies, Infrastructure as Code (IaC), and automation.
A key aspect of the role is serving as the senior technical escalation point for complex incidents, performance challenges, and crisis situations, providing expert guidance and leadership to rapidly restore services and implement long-term improvements.
Your responsibilities
- Serve as the technical Subject Matter Expert (SME) for Oracle, Microsoft SQL Server, and cloud-hosted database platforms.
- Work closely with Product Owners and Engineering teams to support the execution of the database technology roadmap and drive platform modernization initiatives.
- Ensure platform resiliency, availability, security, and sustainability for existing and new database services.
- Lead technical troubleshooting, root cause analysis, and resolution of complex database-related incidents and performance issues.
- Act as the senior technical escalation point during major incidents, crisis situations, and business-critical outages.
- Design, implement, and maintain highly available, secure, and scalable database architectures.
- Perform database performance tuning, optimization, capacity planning, and health assessments.
- Manage and improve database backup, recovery, replication, high availability, and disaster recovery capabilities.
- Drive automation and Infrastructure as Code (IaC) adoption across database platforms using Terraform and associated cloud engineering tools.
Experience and Skills
- 5+ years of experience in database engineering, database administration, or a related technical role.
- Extensive hands-on experience supporting Oracle and/or Microsoft SQL Server environments.
- Strong experience in database performance tuning, backup and recovery, high availability, and disaster recovery solutions.
- Experience with cloud database services, particularly Microsoft Azure database technologies and DBaaS platforms.
- Experience with Infrastructure as Code (IaC) methodologies and Terraform.
- Experience working within cloud engineering, platform engineering, or DevOps operating models.
- Strong troubleshooting and analytical skills with the ability to diagnose and resolve complex technical issues.
- Experience supporting enterprise-scale production environments and business-critical applications.
- Experience working with automation frameworks, scripting languages, and CI/CD pipelines.
- Strong stakeholder management, communication, and collaboration skills.
- Experience participating in architecture reviews and technical design discussions.
- Ability to work effectively in high-pressure operational environments and major incident situations.
- Passion for continuous learning, innovation, and staying current with industry best practices.
- Relevant certifications such as Microsoft Azure Database Administrator, Oracle Database Administration, Azure certifications, or equivalent are desirable.
